Wood is commercially classified as either soft or hard. Wood derived from conifers (eg pine or fir) is considered soft, while Angiosperm wood (oak, alder, walnut) is hard. This distinction is actually derived from the English nomenclature which characterizes conifers as "softwood" and broadleaves as hardwoods, but the translation of softwood and hardwood actually represents a mistake called hypercorrection, as the two English words merely refer to coniferous and broadleaves, respectively.
